introduction
Two million square miles of ocean, and so little to show for it.
This is the Republic of Kiribati, a far-flung array of atolls, with the
unique geographical address of the intersection of the International Date Line and the
Equator in the Pacific Ocean. Its combined land area is so little, and its
international significance so relatively trivial, that few are even aware of its
existence. Due to its obscurity, "Kiribati" is usually pronounced,
incorrectly, as it is spelled, instead of the proper "kiribass."
That it is so obscure is not surprising, but there is much to learn about nations such as
Kiribati. Several neighboring Pacific island nations, such as Tuvalu, Tonga, Samoa, the
Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia, share the same woes and can
all benefit from those solutions which can bring them prosperity regionally or worldwide.
It is the intent of this paper to introduce the reader to Kiribati and its history,
problems, possibilities and potential for the following reasons:
- to increase the awareness level regarding this small nation.
- to inform the reader of the value and importance of this small country.
- to prevent Kiribati from being ignored or overlooked among the nations of the world.
- to propose some solutions which may bolster its social and economic infrastructure.
