my letter from Bob Mayes, Ph.D, CECM, Chancellor of Columbia Southern
University
(This letter was dated June 19, 1996)
Dear Mr. Turk:
I am so sorry that you did not qualify for enrollment at CSU. Please allow me to answer your statements.
- There are no Distance Education Schools offering a Safety Engineering Degree that is accredited by a
regional accrediting agency that I know of. I wish you well in your search.
- You are correct the courses are not ABET-approved, you must be accredited by a regional accrediting
agency to be ABET approved. However, they are the same courses offered at accredited Universities.
- Most people can look at the name of the course and determine what the description of the course would
be, especially if they have any experience in that field. We don't include the course descriptions, but
will send the prospective student descriptions if so needed.
- We prefer to enroll only experienced students .
- This will be looked into, it has not been brought to my attention before. I decline your offer to send
us your corrected copy, we have employees who are more qualified.
- You are correct, [name deleted] does not have a doctorate or an educational degree. We are not a
traditional university, [name deleted] is well qualified
- The catalogue only shows one person with the same last name as myself. However, my daughter does work
here part time and is well qualified for the Job.
In summary, it appears you do not have the experience for a degree with our school and apparently have a
chip on your shoulder. You appear to me as a hostile person lacking any class what so ever. CSU is one of
the largest non-traditional universities in the world with executive offices in Japan and Spain. We have
Government Inspectors who are graduates of this school as well as many of the safety directors of fortune
500 companies. I am appalled at you saying we are a scam.
I would recommend that you grow up, and go to a traditional four year college or university. You need the
discipline. Don't go around accusing any one or any business of being a scam, you may end up in court.
Sincerely,
Bob Mayes, Ph.D., CECM

The multiplicity of errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar that appear above are, believe it or not,
reproduced exactly as they appeared in the original letter. If you found this hard to read, you can try my
corrected copy. By the way, I am assuming that James Ward J.D. is CSU's attorney. I
wonder if he gets any time off.
